Can this device be used for phone lines or phone lines with DSL service?

No, the Ethernet surge suppressor has a clamping voltage rating to low to permit sucessfull use on telephone lines. This Ethernet surge suppressor will clamp ringing voltage to ground...telephones will not ring and if the line has DSL service the high frequency data signal will be interrupted during ringing and most likely cause the DSL modem to retrain.

I have one of these and it stopped working after a lightening storm. Is it defective or did it just work as planned?

Most likely it worked as planned. If it were me, I'd replace it and count myself lucky. ;-)

If i attach the ground wire to the grounding lug on the back of my ups, will that provide adequate grounding? if not, how can i ground this?

That should adequately ground the protector, as long as the ups is plugged into a grounded receptacle outlet.

Has anyone tested this to see if it can hit gigabit speeds?
