Calculus: Early Transcendentals

Well, I spent 3 semesters with this text. It was a bitter/sweet time in my life. This text, along with a few great professors, made tackling the Calculus Beast somewhat easy. What I liked most about this text were the reference card in front, the integral tables in the back, the detailed examples and derivations, and the ranging difficulty of problems. It was also easy to extract the information that the authors thought was important. I still keep this book on my shelf and reference it from time to time. In fact, last night while doing some Fluid Mechanics, I had to look up the gradient operator in this text. Boom! It came right back. ALSO I had the luxury of using the solution manual, both of them actually, this really helped me when I got stuck. Of course, don't just copy out of it seeing as though you won't have one on exam day. Good Luck!

Nicely packaged. Actually took a pair of scissors and more than a minute for me to open the box. The book is nice too, as described. Frankly, I did not expected tissue paper wrapping for a used high school textbook. Definitely will choose MenloParkFriends whenever I have a choice!

I love Calculus and higher math in general so I am biased because the subject is dear to me, however this book deserves praise because it is very well explained. Some things are obviously taken for granted as they should be at this level, but the majority of passages are thoroughly explained, so book is accessible to most users. However, no matter what book one uses, Calculus should be approached with a solid background in Algebra 2 (Intermediate algebra) and Trigonometry (Precal).

The obvious: this book is long, bulky and expensive. However, there is the option of buying it used, and if you don't intend to do all three courses of calculus (or you spend a lot of time carrying your books around), it may make sense to buy the book in parts -- it's also sold in Calc 1/Calc 2/Multivariable sections. As for the content, the text is nothing spectacular: while Stewart manages to nail some things, presenting them clearly and succinctly, there are also many long useless passages. My advice: don't try to read the book, just study his examples, which are often (but not always) quite good, and hope your teacher does a better job explaining the concepts that missed out on a good explanation here. For good examples, good problems, good page layout and a favorable comparison to other mainstream university-level calculus texts, I rate it a 4/5.

Excelente libro pero había pedido la versión en español

I was/am forced to use this throughout 3 Calculus classes (halfway though Calc 3 now). This is by far the worst textbook I have ever used, in any class, ever. The only way I got decent grades was to use other resources, COMPLETELY. The book has maybe one example problem per new concept, which it blows through. Then it has 3 or 4 very unclear "easy" homework problems, then skips right to extremely hard problems. Building confidence is key for doing well in math, especially Calculus. This book does not help with that. Once you *think* you have something grasped, BLAM... Here's a ridiculously hard integral for you, even though we are trying to teach you the integral test for convergence. So you spend time trying to remember how to integrate this certain function, then when it comes to learning the new critical concept, all you can think about is how stupid you are for not knowing the integral. I understand a good textbook challenges you, but on the 10th problem??? Come on... I was excited at first to see this book had some online tutorials for certain homework problems. I was disappointed to see they left things even more unclear than the book, if that's possible. A few vague "hints" and that's it, no answer... not even worth the time. The best phrase to describe this textbook's teaching style is "shooting yourself in the foot" Truthfully, I can't even see this book being 'okay' if you are just reviewing Calculus concepts. Do yourself a favor and get Calculus for Dummies, use other online sources like Paul's Online Notes, PatrickJMT.com, Khan Academy, etc. and you will do fine. This textbook is horrible. These kind of texts are the reason the average person is intimidated by Calculus, and mathematics in general. But, maybe that's because Mr. Stewart and his peers would like to keep it that way.

I didn't do so well in Calculus back in high school but with the help of this book, I aced Calculus in university. That's just how great this book is. It's well written and clear. Just make sure you set aside time to read and practice the questions at the back of chapters.

Very comprehensive text. The book is huge and can be overwhelming. Covers basic, intermediate, and advanced calculus. The exercises feature some excellent real-world problems to show how calculus is used.

I bought this for school, and I really enjoyed the course. The book was brand new, so the quality was of course great. I do pick up math quite easily, so I found that I didn't have to read the entire chapter to understand the material.
