Downton Abbey - Series 1-5 [DVD]

I paid little attention to Downton Abbey when it first appeared on our screens, so, more fool me. Now, I am hooked. Julian Fellows has given us a look at life in the final days of the long Edwardian summer when We dashed around doing things to ensure the convenience and comfort of Them. All this comes to an end, the gulf narrows and the twentieth century appears in a welter of fire, shrapnel, mud and young life cut down. Fellows paints a brilliant picture of the disbelief of Them and the fears of Us, faced by the destruction of a well ordered way of life where everyone knew their Place. So, a good plot line. The cast are magnificent. None more so than the wonderful Maggie Smith. She IS the dowager. A presence to strike terror amongst the Lower Orders, and given some wittily acidulous put down lines. The rest of the cast are, of course, excellent; to the extent that one feels like a member of both the upstairs and the downstairs families. A great watch, and there's LOTS of it!

The plastic box arrived damaged but the discs are ok. I have repaired the box and the set was good value. I am enjoying watching the series again, seeing bits I had forgotten about. Excellent.

Brilliant series which we only started watching during series 5. Now have all the series and my wife is happy to see how the whole thing developed from series 1. Pity we missed out on the pre-release of the whole 6 series due in November so I will have to record from TV. 19 disc set is contained within a plastic library case which allows discs to sit neatly in each tray and allows easy access due to "pages" style trays. Good quality discs and well worth considering if you want this series of discs.

Love it BUT the Dvd's are the worst to follow, no indication of how many episodes in each disc ( could be 1 or 3) and when you continue from one episode to the next, the subtitles kick in and you then have to go back to the main menu and disable them and then find where you were. We buy lots of DVD series and this is the worst to navigate. The series its self is brilliant and the extras are very good as well Well done Julian Fellows and all the brilliant actors and staff on the series

A third of the way through, only one issue. After the first DVD it is difficult to find/select a point to be able to continue from. Being offered a frame that shows a picture from each episode would have made it easier to pick things up again from the correct place. The very first DVD did this but for some reason the remainder do not. A great series so far.

Got hooked watching on OnDemand and missed a load of episodes that they'd taken off. It is beautifully written, beautifully acted, amazing sets and very authentic for the period. I didn't think anyone could out-do the BBC on period drama but this one really does excel. The characters become your friends and your enemies, the plots twist and turn, and I find it extremely difficult not to just put the next DVD in the machine and keep watching. Even my brother got hooked on this when he was working away. I can't say that any one actor or character is a favourite - they all are for their individual personalities. Maggie Smith is, of course, just brilliant but the rest of the cast do not pale beside her inimitable talent. I shall be so sad when it ends.

Having not watched any of these series, I was delighted to be able to sit down and watch as much as I wanted and found myself quite fixated with such compulsive viewing. I did get a bit tired of Edith drooping around and I'm not entirely convinced by the Russian Prince, but otherwise I thought it a very good and highly entertaining series, immediately buying A Moorland Holiday and now I wait for series 6 with anticipation. The package arrived in record time, thank you.

Nie hätte ich gedacht, dass ich einmal nach einer Serie süchtig werden würde - aber es ist passiert. Dieser Film ist so detailgetreu in Bild und Ton, so reich an Bildmaterial und Informationen, die völlig unaufdringlich daherkommen, dass ich ihn immer wieder ansehen möchte und das auch tue, ohne mich zu langweilen. Wir lernen sehr viel über die Zeit, in der unsere Großeltern junge Erwachsene waren. Beginnend im Jahr 2012 mit dem Untergang der Titanic. Geeignet ist die Serie für "all classes". Wer Mode mag, wird hocherfreut sein über immer neue Entdeckungen (upstairs zieht man sich 3x täglich um), wer wissen möchte, wie sich der Adel unterhielt, wird große Freude haben an der Dowager Countess, die ohne Aufhebens zu machen, oder je die Contenance zu verlieren, jede Situation beherrscht, und wer am Aufstieg der unteren Klassen interessiert ist, wird Zeuge unaufhaltsamen Wandels, der dank technischer Innovationen (Telefon) und immer mehr Zugang zu Informationen und Bildung in die untere Etage Einzug hält. Sehr empfehlenswert!

Una fiction di grande classe, tutto bellissimo: dialoghi, scenografia, costumi, attori eccezionali. Precisa ricerca storica e sceneggiatura scritta benissimo. Momenti di grande 'cinema' Anche qualche momento un po' sotto livello generale, ma è naturale in una fiction alla quinta serie.

This complete collection of Downton Abbey includes the London Series and is impeccable. These discs are not knock offs. Do yourself a favor and buy a mutli-region DVD player or multi-region DVD/Blu Ray player and enjoy this wonderful series. Anything but five stars is unjustified.
