I need and additional hdmi port - is there a way to do that without purchasing another docking station?

No you will have to purchase a docking th station or hdmi station

Can this hub charge the battery or power the device in any setup?

This hub can only be used for data transmission and cannot be used for powering other devices

I use my external monitor via usb c port of surface. then i don't need power connection for surface. would this support power from monitor?

Type C only transmits data and cannot supply power

Does the sp7 get very hot when this is connected? i tried a different hub that worked, and the sp7 was hot with the hub in use.

If you have a cover on the SP and it does not allow the fan air to flow properly that could be the issue. The docking station would not over heat your SP.
