is this only for freshwater? or can i use i for saltwater tank ?

The package says "safe for all freshwater aquariums" on the bottom so I don't think so. I also wouldn't recommend these anyway. Most of mine were "exploded" in the package and the ones I did use never melted. I've had much better luck with the API products (quick start, stress Zyme and something else Zyme). Those came highly recommended by an experienced fish keeper and I couldn't be happier with the results.

how many do you use for a 5 gallon?

The instructions are to use one for 10 gallons. Also, it is a very safe product for fish. I do recommend contacting Aqueon. They are very helpful and can assure you that 2 each month will suffice. I do use PURE in conjunction with SeaChem Prime, Stability, and Pristine. Best price for these are also on Amazon.
