I'm looking at the photos, and if the large top opening isn't covered, how do the treats stay inside?

You can also fill it with treats, wet food, peanut butter, etc and freeze before offering. Otherwise, get the large and the small, fill the large, and attach them as shown in the picture to make a treat dispenser.

Is this made of plastic, rubber, or silicone?

Per the description on the page it says, “Zogoflex® is a proprietary blend of plastics; it is NOT rubber. ” BUT, earlier in the description it says “Rubber” prongs. They definitely need to clear this up.

Has anyone used this with a large breed flat-faced dog like a boxer?can they fit their mouth or tongue in to get the stuff out?

I have a Weimaraner, and although not flat-faced, after watching him with this toy, I would say your pup would find a way. That's what keeps them busy. I leave a jar of peanut butter in the fridge to get somewhat hard, then smear some on the inside (near the top and bottom) instead of putting a hard treat in the toy. It keeps him very busy and he could care less that I was leaving : )

I have a Newfoundland will the large be large enough?

I don't think it will be big enough for your dog. My 21 lb. dog has a large and my 3 1/2 lb. chihuahua has a small. I think West Paw makes other treat dispensing toys that are bigger - check on their website - www.westpaw.com.
